Young Lioness Grooming at Dusk
Although not fully grown and neatly washing her face and paws much the way a domestic tabby might, this young lioness already shows much of her power in the size of her paws and head.

Young Lioness 2
This young lioness was grooming herself. I have domestic cats and of course was struck by how familiar her movements were. She still has "baby" spots on her coat.

Lioness
When we think of the power of the "king of Beasts" we don't normally think of the lioness or of her as a Queen of Beasts"". I think this profile shows great strength and nobility and the lives of the lionesses back that up with reality.

Mating Pair Take a Break
This pair of lions were mating, here they are taking a break. Lions are known for the duration of mating ritual. The act of mating induces ovulation. Females prefer dominant males who can protect the young from other males.

Two Cape Buffalo
I think the buffalo closer to the camera is female because she has no "boss" on her head, while the larger buffalo behind is male because he does have the horn boss. They can be very threatening as the male appears to be here.

All around this little mound topped by a shrubby plant is an ocean of grass. The cheetah stationed herself in the bush and patiently scanned the horizon. It was very hot, but she stayed put.

This cheetah used our vehicle as a look out platform. She simply jumped up on top of the roof and although we were all very excited the cat remained calm and left when she felt like it.

This journey was about photographing the "big cats" but I fell in love with the elephants .They are so incredible, intelligent and social, it is hard to describe. We should be protecting them and loving them.

This was a big bull elephant in Musth, he was ready to mate. Most amazingly our guide gently beckoned to him waving his hand the way an elephant might swing his trunk and this giant, silently, approached us and put his head down to see us in the vehicle. It was breathtaking and touched us profoundly.

This huge male elephant was out and about on his own, moving silently. Our guide put his hand out the window and rotated it while softly saying, "hello". The Elephant came right up to us, and motioned with his trunk in return. It was a moment of interspecies communication that I will never forget and feel very grateful for having experienced.

Zebra
Zebras are equids and in the Masai Mara they are the Plains Zebra. The fourth Mughal emperor Jahangir (r.1605–24), commissioned a painting of the zebra, which was completed by Ustad Mansur, who was a court painter that flourished between 1590-1624. He excelled at depicting plants and animals. He was the earliest artist to depict the Dodo in colour, and the first to illustrate the Siberian Crane. He gained the prefix of ustad (=master) and the title of Nãdir-al-’Asr , which means "Unequalled of the Age".
