It did not take long for the heron to more or less forget about the large fish. Great blue herons have to eat by swallowing the prey whole and this kill was just too large to go down. A little white ibis is also on the bank.
The great blue can hunt day and night. Fish are caught by a rapid forward thrust of the neck and head; then held between the mandibles before swallowing.
Nest maintenance must be ongoing, although great blue herons are not very fussy about a clean nest or surrounding area.
