Reed Orchid, Epidendrum, with reed like stems, these orchids grow as epiphytes on trees or in the ground. Over 1000 species grow in tropical America. Named by Carolus Linnaeus in 1740, when he wrote "Species Orchidum" & established scientific names for orchid genes and species. Many reed orchids have small flowers vividly colored like the humming birds and butterflies that pollinate them.
