South of the heart of West Virginia lies the New River Gorge. The area is idyllic from a natural point of view and is home to National and state parks. It's history is one of coal mining, steel rail tracks and railroading...all now abandoned, maintained for tourism or grown over with greenery. The New River Gorge is breathtaking as is the fabulous single arc bridge completed in 1977.
In the part of the Allegheny Mountains you will find the Canaan Valley, a National Natural Landmark. The Valley is home t o Pleistocene habitats, numerous wetlands and a northern boreal relict community. It is amazing.
