Assateague and Chincoteague are barrier islands protected by both state and federal governments. The area is known for it's gorgeous beaches, feral ponies (Chincoteague ponies) and Assateague Lighthouse. In the fall flocks of migratiing Canadian Geese, Snow Geese and waterfowl in general cover the ponds. November is the best month to see the migration, but I this year in mid-November we saw little to no migration. It was obviously too warm for the birds using the Atlantic Flyway to come south. We did see Great Egrets, Snowy egrets, juvenile White Ibis and flocks of sanderlings and red winged blackbirds.
